About the concert - from the Music Director

Music Director Anthony Princiotti recently described the process of programming the upcoming concert.

“I wanted to open this program with music that shared a connection with the more overtly recognizable music on the second half.  What we often call "classical music" was in fact the popular music of its day; for instance, Rossini's operas created the same sensation in the 19th century as did the musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein in 20th century America.  I think it can be interesting to listen to the music of Rossini, Smetana and Bizet through the aural "lens" of a popular sensibility, and at the same time, allow ourselves to think that the music of Richard Rodgers does indeed represent a form of high art.”

"I grew up in a family where tunes from Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals were regularly played and sung; my mother and father met at a summer festival on Cape Cod during a production of Carousel.   As an instrumental musician, the thing that always strikes me about this music is the sheer abundance of Richard Rodgers' gift in writing great melodies.  He was once quoted as saying that he could set the New York City phone book to music, and I wouldn't have bet against it.”
