Violinist Esther Kim
Beethoven Violin Concerto
Fall Masterworks 2009
The rapid climb of this young violinist into the soloist ranks is astonishing. At age nine Esther Kim performed the Paganini Concerto 1; and shortly thereafter the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto on an international television broadcast. By the age of twelve, Ms. Kim had been recognized by the Los Angeles Philharmonic as "Most Promising Musician". Numerous engagements on the international stage have followed.
Ms. Kim has appeared as a guest soloist with the International Sejong Soloists at the Seoul Arts Center with the Seoul Sinfonietta and toured throughout Germany for concerts arranged by the European Union Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY). She performed Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the Nagoya Philharmonic at the Aichi Arts Theatre Concert Hall in Japan during the Aichi Expo. She has given numerous recitals and concerts at Kioi Hall in Tokyo and in Italy, Austria, and Slovenia. In 2006 she was invited to Japan for a performance that was broadcasted on NHK television. Ms. Kim frequently performs benefit concerts with Charles Webb, Dean Emeritus of the Indiana University Music School throughout the United States.
Esther Kim is a prize winner of the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition for Young Violinists; the International Competition for Violin and Viola (in Bled, Slovenia); and the European Union Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY).
Ms. Kim has studied with the masters. By age ten, she was studying at the Juilliard School of Music with the late Dorothy DeLay and Naoko Tanaka. After Delay’s passing, Ms. Kim continued her studies with Hyo Kang. At age 14 Ms. Kim entered the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna to study with Michael Frischenschlager. She is currently studying with Jaime Laredo at the Indiana University School of Music.
Born in Southern California, Esther Kim is already a presence in popular culture. She made her first television appearance at the age of seven on the popular Fox Network television drama, Party of Five. and has been featured on National Public Radio's A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor.
