BRUCKNER: Symphony No. 4 "Romantic"

FINZI: Romance for Strings

HAYDN: Symphony No. 73 "The Hunt"

Let us transport you from the doldrums of a New England winter to the summer fields and forests of England and Austria. Gerald Finzi's Romance for Strings will quietly depict the cool, green English countryside. We're on the chase through the hedgerows and fields with Haydn's "Hunt" Symphony. Tally Ho! Finally, Bruckner's majestic and powerful 4th Symphony, the "Romantic", brings us soaring peaks and forest vistas. Bruckner was an organist, and his symphonies project the power of that instrument.

Most of us are familiar with the titles of Shakespeare's plays. So are movie producers and composers. Whether it's a film version of a play, or a musical or film based on Shakespeare, there's plenty of familiar music around. "West Side Story", which we played in May 2019, is based on Romeo and Juliet, but there are many other adaptations of Romeo and Juliet as well. The musical "Kiss Me Kate" is based on "The Taming of the Shrew". There are many more, and you'll get to hear them all. Popcorn, anyone?
